Thirty years ago, the word media did not exist - except as a medical term. Today it is used to define the means of mass communication. It reminds me of politicians speaking of "the people". It is not a word I like. Question 6 appears to define "the media" as TV, radio, the Press and the Internet. That covers a vast area.

  1. If the role of the media is "to inform, to entertain and to educate" I would say the most important of those three is to inform. Each branch of the media is capable of being informative, entertaining and educational at the same time... though not all the time.
  2. If Reith meant that by maintaining the highest standards of broadcasting, the public would appreciate this and come to demand only the best - that was a worthy objective. I believe that the BBC radio maintains Reith's high standards. However in recent years, I have seen a decline in the quality of British newspapers and Television. The media has little idea of what the people want or need. The public is already overwhelmed with choice.
  3. Radio, TV and serious newspapers try to be objective in reporting news. Opinions are generally confined to the leader page or presented as a personal viewpoint. A journalist's point of view piece is just as valid as a news report. Different kinds of journalism. And the personal view will take longer to write.
  4. I have little knowledge of the Polish media. My views are mainly directed at the British media.
  5. I am against censorship. Freedom of speech is one of the four basic freedoms enshrined in the charter of the United Nations. However, you know the saying: the first casualty of war is the truth. Example: in May 1944, if you had discovered the date and target of the D-day landing, you would not have splashed it over the front page, would you?
  6. I prefer radio and newspapers because they are portable. My favourite is BBC Radio 4 because it is broadcasting of the highest quality and I can listen to it and do other things at the same time - although I draw the line at the Archers.
