British Studies Now

This magazine from the British Council has been appearing since 1991. Its history reveals the changes which have taken place during the last decade - initially its focus was on British Studies, today it is in the process of reinventing/ rebranding itself as Intercultural Studies - initially it was only in hard copy, today it is primarily available electronically. Hence its appearance here.

The entire archive is now available for downloading as pdf if you have the adobe acrobat free software to read it with. Unfortunately it has no index or search facility, and it seems impossible to provide direct links to individual articles.

The magazine has a number of functions - it is in part a house journal for the BC in the field of cultural studies with news and reports of events, but it also publishes a range of papers in the cultural studies field of wider interest. It inevitably, if not always explicitly, promotes the policy of the British Council and through it reflects attitudes found in the British government. Its multiculturality is perhaps its most anglocentric aspect, an open expression of the struggle of ‘Britain’, or at least certain parts of its population, to come to terms with the past. It is also decidedly academic with few articles by or for teachers. This is how it appears to a UK native - how does it appear to you….?

Produced in Poland by The British Council (c) 2002. The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational and cultural relations. Registered in England as a Charity.
