The European Union - Classroom Activities

Classroom activities combining use of the Internet for research and oral presentations

Teacher's Notes

The activities below, developed by Agnieszka Gawlik with the help of Barbara Kapusta, are planned for two 45-minute lessons. The materials can be used in cross-curriculum teaching (European education) in either a gimnazjum or a liceum.

The skills practised during the lessons are:

research skills using the Internet; reading for gist and specific information; writing summaries; giving an oral presentation

The lessons are Internet-based and therefore require computers with access to the Internet, at least for the first 45-minute lesson. Each topic is linked with a web site that provides information on the subject to an official EU or UK government web site.

Step 1

The topics dealt with in these lessons are:

Students read an interview with a British person from a farming background and note his opinion on each of the above (this might be done before the lesson at home).

Step 2

In class students are divided into four groups and choose names for their groups.

Step 3

The teacher gives each group one of the topics above and instructs them to:

  1. Prepare a brief written summary of the main issues in their topic as a preparation for an oral presentation which they will later give to the whole class
  2. Write two questions based on their presentation on the topic for the other groups
  3. Sample chart for the activity

Step 6

As each group gives its presentation the others try to write down answers to the six questions they have.

Step 7

The following system could be used for scoring.
