Starbienino Then and Now

by Marek Byczkowski, the manager of KUL (Kaszubian Folk University) in Wieżyca and its branch in Starbienino

Starbienino and the other places around were inhabited by Germans and germanized Pomeranians up to 1945. The former owner of Starbienino was probably named Hammer, but we do not know exactly. After World War II , the German farms were converted into state farms. It did not apply to small Starbienino, which was included in such a farm based in Lublewo. The people brought here under a special governmental decree were given small plots to cultivate. There is a big difference between people living in Wieżyca, who are mainly of Kaszubian origin, and those living in Starbienino, who were brought here in the 1940s from the south-east of Poland. The latter came here with different traditions and experiences which are inspiring and challenging.
