What are we doing?
Our aim is to support the introduction of intercultural approaches into English teaching - in response to the changing role of English and the needs of Polish learners - through:
- providing space and a welcoming atmosphere for exploring culture in ELT
- encouraging open, investigatory and IC attitudes within language learning
- producing materials and activities with a variety of learner outcomes
- giving teachers, learners and trainers greater choice in the classroom
We see culture in ELT as the point where languages and real worlds meet as partners of equal importance, where teachers and learners:
- are given the opportunity to reflect on the role of culture in FLT
- can develop the awareness and skills necessary for using English in its new 'real world' contexts
- can use English as a means of exchanging cultures communicatively
These objectives will be achieved through our four strands outlined below.
Why are we doing it?
We live in an era of unprecedented change:
- on the global level (e.g. globalisation/ fragmentation and the internet)
- on the national level (e.g. Poland's moves to EU membership/
the emphasis on the plurality of cultures within UK society)
- in the role of English (e.g. as an international language - EIL)
As a consequence:
- IC approaches have been given prominence in the Polish Ministry
of Education guidelines for Foreign Languages along with increased
emphasis on skills and the importance of using FLT for wider cross-
curricular ends
- the British Council is increasingly emphasising IC Studies
and basing its work in sustainable Polish institutional environments.
The CELT project reflects both these aims.
