RELIGION
- In
1990, 65% of the population of Britain described
themselves as practising Christians
- In
1995, 40% of the British public believed in a
divine deity.
- By
2010 Christians are predicted to number 55% of
the population.
- In
1999 only 7.5% of the population regularly
attended a Christian church.
- In
1992, Anglicans were the largest Christian
denomination in Britain with 26.7 million members.
- 80%
of couples who get married in Britain go through
a religious ceremony.
- The
Bible is still a best-seller in Britain. Over a
million copies are sold every year.
- There
are two official churches in Britain: the Church
of England and the Church of Scotland. The Roman
Catholic church also has members in both
countries.
- In
1970 there were about 300,000 Muslims in Britain:
in 1995 this had risen to 1,100,000.
- There
are more than 300 mosques in Britain. The largest
of these is in Central London.
- The
Jewish community in Britain numbers around 350,000.
- There
are also large Sikh and Hindu communities in
Britain, numbering 600,000 and 400,000
respectively.
