|
Over the centuries constant waves of migrants have come to Britain from
all parts of the world. This has meant that the make up of the British
population has never stood still. For example,
in the 19th century large numbers of Irish immigrants came over to work
on the new railway and canal systems which were then being developed. More
recently, since 1945, people from a wide variety of backgrounds including
Poland, Italy, Nigeria, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Jamaica have chosen
to settle in Britain. Consequently modern Britain is a multi-cultural society.
One result of this is that the festivals and holidays celebrated in contemporary
Britain not only include the traditional ones discussed elsewhere in these
pages but many others as well. Some of these are religious, while some stem
from a group of people feeling the need to express themselves in some way.
