·        cross the Rubicon - take an irrevocable step

·        the die is cast – a decision has been taken and cannot  be changed

·        the eleventh hour – the last moment before sth. important happens

·        one by one – one after another, done in turn

·        back to square one – back in exactly the same situation that you started from

·        Solomon’s verdict – a wise decision satisfying conflicting sides in the dispute

·        Herculean task – a dangerous or difficult task

·        forty winks – a short nap

·        utopian idea – an idea impossible to realize

·        dressed up to the nines – wearing your best clothes

·        two heads are better than one – two people will have better or more ideas than one person

·        ten to one – used to say that sth. is very likely

·        Tom Thumb – a character in a fairy tale who was very short (as tall as his father’s thumb)

·        a five o’clock shadow – the dark colour on a man’s chin where the hair has grown a little because he hasn’t shaved

·        dozens and dozens – a lot of something

·        seven league boots – magic boots whose wearer was able to take strides 7-league long (one league is about 5 kilometres)

·        two’s company, three’s a crowd – used to say that it’s better to leave two people alone

·        not to care two hoots – not to care at all

·        prince charming – a perfect man whom a young girl might dream about

·        sixty-four-thousand-dollar-question – the most important question which you don’t know the answer to

·        tantalizing – making you feel a strong desire to have sth. that you cannot have (e.g. the tantalizing smell of sth. that you cannot eat now)

·        as if by magic – in a surprising way that seems impossible to obtain

·        at sixes and sevens – disorganised and confused

·        of Olympian proportions – very big

·        on cloud nine – very happy

·        two can play at that game – used to tell someone that they will not have an advantage over you by doing sth. because you can do it too

·        offer an  olive branch -  say or do sth. in order to show that you want to end a disagreement or a quarrel

·        give sb a five – to hit the inside of sb.’s hand with your hand to show that you’re very pleased about sth.

·        Muse – a person that makes you have good ideas and inspires you to create sth.

·        fairy godmother - a woman with magic powers who saves people from trouble

·        cut the Gordian knot – quickly solve a difficult problem by determined action

·        sixth sense – a special feeling or ability to know things without using any of your five ordinary senses

·        nine days’ wonder – a thing or event that makes people excited for a very short time
