Our Daily Bread

This item was written by two teachers from the Czech Republic, Karin Havlíčková who works with primary pupils, and Helena Melounová who works with secondary school students

‘Give us this day our daily bread’ is a line from the Lord’s Prayer in English. Bread is so basic to our lives it is easy to overlook and easy to think it is the same everywhere, but every country will have its different loaves and tastes. When talking with people from other countries, English is often the language we use - so how could you tell them about your bread if you were visiting them, and could you understand their description of their bread if they were visiting you?

In this item you will learn about bread, its language and in the interviews you can read about bread from different parts of the world.

  • Did you know that dough can explode?
  • What kind of bread would you eat in Brazil?
  • Have you heard of ‘banitza’?
