Food and the Senses

This item was written by
Arianna Kitzinger from Sopron in Hungary and Anna Gorczyńska from Chełm in Poland

This item will introduce you to the value of exploring cultural themes through all of the five senses. It will also introduce you to the fieldwork techniques through which it can be explored and to food in Kraków.

Why the five senses? The sight of food can make us salivate (see Pavlov) let alone the sounds and smells of cooking; the taste goes without saying. And touch? - how do you judge the ripeness of fruit or find out if baked bread is ready … and what of the pleasures of licking your fingers?
