Christmas - A Classroom Activity

Task 1

  • Write down five words you associate with Christmas
  • Discuss with your partner what Christmas means to you. What do you like/dislike most about Christmas?
Task 2
  • Work with a partner. You are going to read a short poem called Christmas by Wendy Cope. Look at these words and decide... .
  • which of them you would expect to find in the poem
  • which of the words rhyme

single    cheerily    dreadful    families    merry    sing    church    tingle

  • Now read the poem and see if you were right.
At Christmas little children sing and merry bells jingle
The cold winter air makes our hands and faces tingle
And happy families go to church and cheerily they mingle
And the whole business is unbelievably dreadful, if you’re single
