Annotated Bibliography Series Number 4

If you have any useful comments to make about books and audio- visual materials you use that you would like to share, please send them to elt@britcoun.org.pl so that we can add them to our forthcoming editions.

This bibliography is divided into three sections:

  1. Specialised books on Sport available from British Council Resource Points
  2. Other books on Sport used as research in this issue
  3. The bibliography from 'The British at Play' by Nigel Townson

1. British Studies Resource Points

Cashmore, E., Making Sense of Sports, Routledge, 1996

Cashmore, based at Staffordshire University, England, is a renowned expert in the field of the sociology of sport. This book is an excellent introductory work to the whole area of Sport and Society, which takes a global view of the issues and is presented in a very readable style, mixing academic arguments with topical debates in sport.

Holt, R., Sport and the British - A Modern History, Oxford University Press, 1989

Rightly considered a classic, the book traces the development of British Sport since 1800 paying particular attention to what is distinctive about British Sport and what it means to ordinary people. As well as the changes from traditional to modern forms of sport over time, Holt also makes us aware of the continuities.

Obelkevich & Catteral (eds.), Understanding Post-War British Society, Routledge, 1994

Brackenridge and Woodward, in Chapter 15 in this book, write about 'Gender inequalities in leisure and sport in post-war Britain'.

Townson, N., The British at Play - A Social History of British Sport from 1600 to the Present, Cavallioti Publishers, 1997

This is the book reviewed in this issue and extracts from it have been extensively used in the Sport and British Society section. Not only does it provide a rich source of information on the various themes discussed in Sport and British Society, but it also has accompanying worksheets which can be used in the classroom and guidance for tutors. If your British Studies Resource Point does not have this book, then please contact us at: elt@britcoun.org.pl

Britain's Sport and Fitness Industry, Foreign and Commonwealth Office London, 1999 -More interesting detail about various aspects of the sports and fitness industry, such as equipment, clothing, surfaces, stadia, and so on.

Dunning, E. Sport Matters - Sociological Studies of Sport, Violence, and Civilization, Routledge, 1999

3. The bibliography from 'The British at Play'

The bibliography has been divided into two sections.

  • The core bibliography represents those works which would constitute an adequate starting point for a library section on sport and leisure. It has been further sub-divided into two sections, essential and recommended, allowing libraries short on funds to create a small but selective reading section. Further reading tasks in each unit are based around the core bibliography wherever possible.
  • The reference section lists those works the author has consulted in the preparation of this book but which do not figure in the core bibliography.
